Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship

On June 7th, nine District 7870 Rotarians interviewed six outstanding candidates for the Ambassadorial Scholarship. This year's Ambassadorial Scholar is Lori Duff, who was sponsored by the Capital City Sunrise Club in Concord, NH. Lori's scholarship is for the years 2009 - 2010.
Lori lives in Concord and is currently a photo-journalist for the Concord Monitor newspaper. She is a graduate of Indiana University and received a Masters in journalism from the University of Missouri. She was a Peace Corp volunteer for 30 months spending much of her time in Kunahiri (Africa's Ivory Coast) doing water and sanitation work to eradicate the guinea worm. She has also been involved with Habitat for Humanity. She received the Award of Excellence from the Alexia Foundation for World peace for project entitled "Vanishing Black Towns in Texas". This project included both photography and written stories.
The countries she has selected to potentially go to for her Ambassadorial year include: Tanzania, Uganda, Philippines, Guyana and Kenya. The final choice will be made by Rotary International. The reason she chose these countries was based on their cultural histories and their need for environmental protection. The countries also tend to be less developed and more tied to the earth. Her desired field of study is environmental conservation and management.
Lori's long term goals are to be involved in projects that work towards the protection of the natural world. She feels that through her skills and the power of photographic evidence plus the use of the written word, that she can bring greater understanding to the issues.
Tony Gilmore, from the Capital City Rotary Club is her sponsor and will stay in touch and help her for the next three years. He will also be assisting her in meeting the requirements of the program objectives of the Ambassadorial Scholarship, which includes visiting and making presentations at a number of Rotary Clubs and civic organizations in District 7870 during the next year.
